I think the worst was on the last day of convention. We often had to travel 6 hours from the convention city to our home. We would wait until the final song and prayer and head to the restrooms with our little girls only to find that the restrooms had been closed by the cleaning department and could not be used. We circled the entire stadium and found no restrooms. Mind you, this was not just a one-time occurrence. This happened year after year. The last convention we attended, we left before the final song and prayer so that we could get the family road ready for the trip home. BTW, Rocky was an attendant and I volunteered in Accounting - there were no special restroom privileges afforded to us. If I was on duty in the Accounting Dept., I could use the restroom there, but my family was not allowed in that special area. We tried to have a good attitude and remind ourselves that the brothers in Zimbabwe were probably meeting in the wilderness, lucky to have an apple box to sit upon!

Help - shunning stories needed
by Mr Rocky inmy letter to the editor to the davenport times just came out on june 30, 2005. the spokane spokesman review is interested in doing a story about shunning as a result of reading my letter.
the religion reporter wants to start working on it wednesday.
does anybody want to tell their story of odd things they have been shunned for by jw's.

Kwin, I am so sorry about you and your sister. Rocky and I have the only grandchildren, both of whom have not chosen the JW path of life. And I find it interesting that the elders are leaving you alone. Rocky and I have spent the last 7 or so years trying to quietly fade, so as not to cause problems with their shunning policy, but the local elders couldn't leave us alone. We are hoping publicity about shunning will help folks like you and your sister. There should be full disclosure to people before they join a religious organization. Currently, people who study with JWs are not told of the policy on matters such as disfellowshipping and disassociation. I believe much heartache would be avoided if there is full disclosure. Shunning is something that should have been left in the Dark Ages.

I think its sad
by Alexander ini wouldn't be here wasn't it for a link on google on the moscow ban that led me here.
i am shocked by the hatred many of you display in your posts.
some claim that we break up marriages, yet some of the happiest couples i know are faithfull brothers and sisters.

Since when does the shunning policy promote good communication between husband and wife? You talk of 'divided' households, but apply that term only to husband/wife combos where one mate has never been a witness. If good loving relationships are promoted in 'divided' household, than why did my mother tell my daughter not to talk to her dad anymore, now that he is DF'd? and what about when they make the announcement that I am DF'd? is she not supposed to talk to either of us? and by implication, since I am not yet DF'd and my husband is, I am not supposed to talk to him either? how does that promote a happy family life?

It broke my heart when our youngest daughter called to tell us her grandmother told her she shouldn't talk to her father now that he is DF'd. Since we went public with our story we have received so many calls of support from our community. The concept of shunning is so unnatural to everyone except for JWs and a few other extreme religious groups.

Good point about 'company' men. My father is of this sort. My father will not talk to us because he has to be a good example to the congregation since he is an elder. Getting an education beyond high school teaches you to have a personal and social conscience, neither of which 'company' men have. Someone with a personal conscience would not allow an organization to come between them and their blood family. WT teaches organizational conscience and tries to convince rank and file that this conscience is based on scriptural principles when in fact this conscience is based on GB whim.

Just curious
by pratt1 in.
since this is the 4th of july weekend, do any of you display the american flag in or around you home?.
i have to admit, although i have been faded for many years, i find it difficult to even own anything with the american flag symbol.

I have mixed feelings about patriotism. There are so many people who elevate patriotism to worship. While I personally value freedom granted to my by this country more than I ever have before, I am not pleased with the way some of our political leaders use patriotism in a fashion similar to the way JWs used their Bibles. The world doesn't need more excuses for oppression and it seems that since 9/11, patriotism has been used in such a way.
However, we are going to celebrate Independence Day this year, complete with fireworks and a BBQ, but without a flag (of course, we live in the middle of nowhere, nearest neighbor's house is 3-miles away so no one would see if we had a flag or not). Independence Day this year means so much more because of our fight for freedom of speech (Rocky was DF'd for speaking about the Silentlambs issue) and our consequent independence from all things WT.

We are celebrating Independence Day on Sunday, July 3, which is also my birthday - Independence being a double meaning. We are celebrating Rocky being DF'd (a few weeks ago) and thought it appropriate to celebrate the holiday and my birthday at the same time. We have about a dozen friends coming over for a BBQ, a couple of them are also xJWs. We will be setting off some fireworks, still legal here in rural Easterna Washington. This will be Rocky's first time celebrating the 4th of July holiday. Happy holidays! - Mrs R
